Non-inverter
Lower upfront price
Simple and widely available
Compressor switches fully on and off
Temperature swings and more noise at start-up
The difference is in the compressor, and it decides how your electricity bill and noise level look over the years. Here is when each type makes sense.

Short answer: choose an inverter aircon if you use it for many hours every day, because it adjusts its speed instead of switching on and off. Choose non-inverter only for rooms you rarely cool, where the lower price matters more than running cost.
Lower upfront price
Simple and widely available
Compressor switches fully on and off
Temperature swings and more noise at start-up
Compressor changes speed to hold the temperature
Usually quieter and more steady
Higher upfront price
Repairs can cost more if the control board fails
The more hours you run the aircon, the sooner an inverter model recovers its extra cost through lower electricity use. A bedroom unit used every night is a typical case. A guest room used a few times a month may never pay it back.
| How you use it | Usually better fit |
|---|---|
| Several hours every day or night | Inverter |
| Short, occasional use | Non-inverter can be enough |
| Rented room, short stay | Portable or a cheaper unit |
Air-conditioners sold in Singapore carry an NEA energy label with ticks: more ticks means lower electricity use. An inverter is one way a model can earn more ticks, so compare the tick rating and the annual kWh figure on the label, not just the word inverter.
Right-sizing matters as much: a unit that is too small runs flat out. Use the aircon sizing guide to pick the BTU first.

If you run the aircon for many hours every day, an inverter model usually pays back its higher price through lower electricity use. If you only use it a few hours a week, a non-inverter model can make more sense.
A non-inverter compressor switches fully on and off to hold the temperature. An inverter compressor changes its speed, so it holds a steady temperature with fewer start-stop cycles and is usually quieter.
Not always. Energy use also depends on room size, how well the room is insulated, the temperature setting and the unit's tick rating. Compare the energy label, not just the word inverter.
Look at both. The NEA label's ticks tell you how efficient the model is in a standard test, and an inverter is one way a model reaches more ticks.
Some models are, but many portable units are non-inverter. Check the spec sheet before you buy.
