Fridge buying guide for Singapore homes

A fridge runs 24 hours a day for years, so size and energy ticks matter more than the sale discount. Here is how to choose, and how to avoid the fit problems that come up on delivery day.

Short answer: for three to four people, look at about 300 to 450 litres, and choose the highest energy-tick model you can afford because a fridge never switches off. Measure the door, corridor and lift first.

Step 1

How many litres do you need?

Capacity is quoted in litres of storage space. A fridge that is too small leads to extra shopping trips; one that is too big wastes electricity cooling empty space.

HouseholdRough capacityTypical type
1โ€“2 people150โ€“300 LSingle or two-door
3โ€“4 people300โ€“450 LTwo-door, top or bottom freezer
5+ people450 L and aboveLarger two-door or multi-door
Measure first. Check the kitchen space, the doorway, the corridor and the lift, and leave a few centimetres around the fridge for air flow.
Step 2

Which type suits you?

Two-door (top freezer)

Lower price

Fits most HDB kitchens

Freezer at top, so you bend for the fridge shelves

Bottom freezer

Fridge at eye level

Good everyday access

Usually costs more

Deep freezer drawers can hide items

Side-by-side / multi-door

Large capacity

More features such as water dispensers

Needs a wide space

Usually costs more upfront and to run

Step 3

Energy ticks and running costs

Refrigerators are covered by NEA's mandatory energy labelling, so every model shows a tick rating: more ticks means less electricity use. Because a fridge is on all day, a higher-tick model can recoup its extra price over several years.

Compare the annual kWh figure on the label when two models have the same ticks. Some energy-efficient appliances also qualify for Climate Vouchers; check the official scheme rules.

Features that help: an inverter compressor (smoother and often quieter) and frost-free cooling (no manual defrosting).

Step 4

Checks before you buy

  1. Measure the door, corridor and lift, plus the kitchen space and door swing.
  2. Check clearance for air flow at the back and sides, as listed in the manual.
  3. Ask about delivery and whether the store removes your old fridge.
  4. Read the warranty, especially how long the compressor is covered.

FAQ

Common questions

What size fridge do I need for a family of four?

A capacity of roughly 300 to 450 litres is a common range for three to four people. Go bigger if you shop weekly in bulk or cook a lot.

What do the energy ticks on a fridge mean?

Refrigerators sold in Singapore carry an NEA energy label with ticks. More ticks means lower electricity use, so a higher-tick model usually costs less to run over the years.

Is a two-door or side-by-side fridge better?

Two-door (top or bottom freezer) fridges suit most HDB kitchens and are cheaper. Side-by-side and multi-door models give more room and features but need wider space and often cost more to run.

Does a fridge need frost-free or inverter features?

Frost-free means you do not defrost by hand. An inverter compressor adjusts its speed instead of switching fully on and off, which is usually quieter and can save power. Both are worth checking in the spec sheet.

How much space should I leave around a fridge?

Leave a few centimetres at the back and sides for air flow, and check the door swing so it can open fully. The product manual lists the exact clearances.

Will the fridge fit through my door and lift?

Measure the fridge's width, depth and height against your doorway, corridor and lift before ordering, and ask the store how it will be delivered.
